PROGRESS FOR BIG DATA IN KUBERNETES

Ted Dunning, MapR

Kubernetes is trending and for good reason. Containers and effective orchestration and management of them like Kubernetes provides can make it much easier to manage the wild proliferation of systems and services that we are seeing in on premises data centers and in the cloud. Kubernetes has been adopted as the native container language for the top three cloud vendors and most large enterprises. But as good as Kubernetes is, it only solves the computational half of the problem. The other half of the problem is the management of persistent state such as files, tables and event or message streams. We need something like Kubernetes, but for data. I will describe Kubernetes including a high-level description about how it works and how you can get it to work for you.
